Medieval wall tapestry,
the perfect decorative accessory for the
medieval knights castle walls
The Burgundian dukes were the first to give tapestries the status of hard currency, using them as ransom after several disastrous battles.
The tapestries became desirable luxuries and collectable object to be brought out and displayed on great occasions.
In their gallery of medieval tapestry wall hangings
you will find unique medieval tapestry pictures.
Weavers in the early Middle Ages were called on mostly to weave tapestries with religious themes. These were often conceived as sets of hangings for churches and cathedrals.
Tapestry then found a new home in fortified castles and palaces and a new repertoire of images and themes emerged: romantic love scenes called Minneteppiche and mysterious allegories. These showed “wild” men and women, animals, and some characteristic interlaced lozenges filled alternately with monsters and pairs of birds, or peasant scenes of haymaking.
Military battles, armorial devices, hunts, and other adventures were another great feature of medieval tapestries. Popular designs in the later Middle Ages were mille fleurs tapestries, typified by the hundreds of tiny flowers that make up their backgrounds. They were often used in pastoral scenes and verdure tapestries. Verdures are pictures of landscapes that emphasize trees and foliage with, perhaps, a waterfall or stream, woodland birds and animals in the foreground, and a castle or village in the background.

The Lord Raffles Lion Throne Chair at design toscano
Hand-carved solid mahogany antique replica. Exquisite medieval antique replica throne chair!
Originally created for Lord Thomas Stamford Raffles, who founded the British colony of Singapore, it features deep, large-scale, solid mahogany hand-carvings of massive growling lion heads.
The deeply cushioned seat and back are hand-upholstered on both sides in a button-tufted ebony faux leather with nail head trim.
Our regal Gothic throne is topped by an ornate, hand-carved mahogany coat of arms. Impressive paired or individually.
Charles II Side Chair
Handcarved solid mahogany antique replica.
Since the 1700's, European castles have filled their massive halls with elaborately carved chairs like our exclusive replicas.
Picture today's highly skilled craftsmen, like those 300 years ago, carving a single, solid mahogany chair by hand - you'll soon realize why it is wrought with ornate beauty!
A hand-rubbed finish and a multi-colored coat of arms jacquard tapestry, upholstered on front and back, give it all the authenticity of a fine period antique.
The Lord Raffles Lion Table
Hand-carved mahogany signature piece is an investment in European style
It’s nothing short of amazing! The four deeply carved lions’ heads with bared teeth, the ornate heraldic eagles and the exquisite scroll-worked drawers on this medieval table took more than five weeks to create.
Named after Lord Thomas Samford Raffles, who founded the British colony of Singapore, over seven feet long, this solid mahogany piece with carved stretcher bar and quality wood veneer top makes an amazing statement as an impressively oversized desk, conference table or even as a six-person dining table.

Amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe Medieval theme works really well in large spaces. Problem is, most of us have modest rooms in our homes. If your aim is to just have fun, anything goes, but if you want a sense of authenticity, cramming a suit of armor, a huge iron chandelier, banners, etc. into a 14X14 foot living room doesn't really say "Medieval", as much as it says "tacky". We have a late Medieval style room in our rented apartment, and chose to go with a "merchants house" theme, not the castle thing. No suits of armor (just a breastplate hanging on a wall) no huge floor candelabras (just a few period candlesticks on tables) and furniture to scale. Rush floor matting and other details really do give the room the feel that we wanted. It looks "believable", but again, that isn't what all fantasy buffs are after.
